Who? SOLOMON-FUCKING-KANE that’s who. Nearing the end of last year, the cinematic version of Solomon Kane debuted in France and then was imported to other places except for a theater near me. If anything gets, me it’s fantasy. if anyone has listened to the OOC podcast, they can hear me profess my love to fantasy books. Robert E Howard, creator of Conan and Kull, began fleshing out the Kane character in the early 20th century. Unlike Kull and Conan, the Kane saga is set in puritanical England. While still dealing with the normal Sword and socery themes such as magic, demons and swords, this swashbuckling hero in a funny sets himself apart from his fictional collegues. Armed with rapiers and guns Solomon Kane is a badass who breaks his vow of nonviolence for some serious demon killing. Yes. that’s right. Its going to be awesome. While this movie looks derivative of every epic fantasy movie put out since the turn of the century, its source material is still fresh. Kane has not been done before and does not have the legacy to live up to like Conan. Its time period also is refreshing, leaving the prehistoric civilization for a setting not usually associated with fantasy. The film is most likely going to have a base palette of dark grey only broken by the red hue of fire. It looks like it will be raining alot and most characters will be soiled by mud. I understand my excitement for this movie completely contradicts my previous posts of loathing for book adaptations. For some reason Howard’s work is always the exception to my rules. Howard’s character, whether due to simplicity or rich visuals translate themselves to well into film. Conans character isn’t hard to nail down by anyone over the age of 20. Kane’s character will a little bit more complex is pretty straightforward and will take a backseat to some serious demon killing. The original run of Conan movies with the governor? Awesome. Kull the Conqueror? Not so great but bearable. Red Sonja? Ridiculous. Solomon Kane? could be the return of Howard’s characters into theater. If it ever gets there.
Note: Conan is included in spell check; Kull is not.
