Ohh Michael Bay what can or cant you do. 2010 will mark the year that A Nightmare On Elm Street rolls off the assembly line. I heard about this project before the great sleep and am pleased to find that it is already completed upon waking. On the Hollywood playground, Michael Bay grabbed the Friday the 13th, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Nightmare franchises like the selfish kid hoarding all the dogdgeballs. He then gave the projects to two different different directors both with high experience in directing music videos. The reboot of Friday the 13th was so laughably weigthless it added nothing constructive creative or substantial to the Jason universe and might as well have been “Friday the 13th Part XI.” While the new Nightmare trailer looks a little bit more promising, it still seems a bit unnecessary considering the setting, characters and villain all looks the same.  Sure Jackie Earle Haley as Kruger seems like a good idea and the film looks slightly more edgy and dark. While this fresh start may seem enjoyable, the question still remains whether or not this film can revive Fredrich Kruger and whether or not he needed it in the first place.
Unlike the Friday franchise, the Nightmare series, in my opinion holds its self up admirably. In fact I will go on the record and say that all of the odd installments stand as the pillars for the franchise. If we forget the even numbered movies then we have 4 solid installments with a decent crossover. I will not argue the issue of reboots and makeovers. Moviemakers will do whatever they want to whatever they feel like. However, if one is going to reboot a series, try to seem atleast interested in adding something new to the series. Wes Craven’s New Nightmare broke the fourth wall. Freddy Vs. Jason did a surprising job combining two story archs. from the stills and trailers, the new Nightmare movie is bordering on a high budget fan fiction. Young actors and updated special effects are not a decent substitute for a new storyline. Perhaps I am wrong and the Nightmare franchise will live to see a new decade. However, if I am right then the new Freddy will join the new Jason and the new Leatherface in the halls of failed comebacks.
