This morning I was wandering around looking for movie news when I happened to on this story. Alex Tae, the screenwriter for the not so bad Watchmen adaptation and the now famous Ninja Scroll anime is reportedly taking on “The Fourth Realm Trilogy.” Do not worry if you are wondering what that is; at first I thought it was a venerable Sci-fI classic that I would feign knowledge and familiarity. The Fourth Realm, much to my relief was only finished last year and sits more comfortably next to hardback best sellers than it does in the science fiction classics. More Crichton and less Herbert. All reviews concerning the story point to the a mix between 1984, Snow Crash, The Davinci Code and half baked philosophies concerning The Matrix. It sounds like perfect summer reading.
So why should you care about a mediocre Technothriller? Three words: John Twelve Hawks. It wasn’t until I learned of the erratic behavior of the books author till I started to take notice. “John Twelve Hawks” has crafted mild buzz surrounding his mysterious and aloof behavior. Rumors exists that he only talks to his agent through voice scrambler and lives his life “off the grid.” There are also rumors that he is an alternate personality of Dan Brown and eats babies for breakfast. Holy shit this is awesome. Seclusion by established writers is an interesting trait to possess if done with enough craft and tact. In an age already saturated by self promotion, one could find it refreshing, even intriguing when an author refuses to do interviews or appear on television. Mr. Hawks’ seclusion however, seems to be entirely built on self promotion and the misconception that anyone gives a shit about the lives of best selling authors. The announcement of the adaptation has gotten me excited at the possibility of more publicity stunts by a man who goes by J12H. I hope he appears at the premier on a motorcycle with battle ready kitanas strapped to his back.
